Mental health is something we all have, just in the same way we have physical health. Yet, it is often the case that we are far more likely to seek help for a physical health condition than we are for issues with our mental health.
In more recent times, the stigma surrounding mental health issues has started to decrease. Well known celebrities and influencers are now using their status to talk openly about their experiences of poor mental health or mental illness. Even mainstream television channels have established campaigns to encourage people to talk more.
This years theme for Mental Health Awareness Week is ‘move more for mental health’
Studies show that exercise can have a positive impact on our mental health. By releasing serotonin, the feel good hormone into our brain, taking part in physical activity can significantly reduce symptoms of common mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression. It can also help us to set goals and feel a sense of accomplishment when we achieve them.
We understand that starting exercise can feel overwhelming, but you don’t need to run a marathon to exercise! Start slow at your own pace and build it up. You could start with a gentle 10 minute walk each day and gradually increase this each week. Another great way to find motivation to exercise is to do it with others! Thanks to funding from Hertfordshire County Council, Future Living runs a free weekly boxing group in Hertford for women every Friday. To register, simply email: [email protected]
Annie Brewster, who is The High Sheriff of Hertfordshire and sits on Future Living’s board as Vice Chair visited the women’s boxing group to see it in action. Annie is keen on using sport as a way to improve physical and mental health. She has made her theme for this year, sport for good. Sandra, who is the CEO and founder of Future Living also attended to see how the group positively impacts the women who take part.
Talking can be another great way to support our mental health. Future Living Hertford also offers an affordable counselling service. We offer a range of models to suit a variety of client needs. Counselling can help by encouraging you to learn more about yourself and how your mind works. It can also allow you to navigate your feelings and establish healthier habits and boundaries.
There is no one answer for looking after our minds. It is often a combination of different tools that can help us to find the right balance. Once you find what works for you, it’s far easier to implement this into your everyday life until it becomes part of your routine and dare we say, a walk in the park!
