Working alongside Hertfordshire Police through our Lived Experience Training

FLH Police training blog

Following the successful pilot earlier in the year, Future Living Hertford are delighted to be facilitating The Police Domestic Abuse Lived Experience Training. From January next year, we will be working with Hertfordshire police to deliver the training to up to 1000 officers. We are pleased to be part of the process in ensuring front line officers are given the training and knowledge to be able to support victims of domestic abuse in their work.

How our training will help…

The police deal with domestic abuse on a daily basis as part of their role. Calls relating to domestic abuse are made every 30 seconds in the UK.

This course will help front line police officers become more familiar with the varied nature of domestic abuse, how this impacts victims and the effect of interactions with police, aspiring for positive outcomes for victims. Participants will build an awareness of the psychology of domestic abuse through hearing from victims themselves and consider how policing can be delivered to support them. The training is intended to engage officers and navigate challenging discussions and conversations.

The training, which was written by Future Living Hertford’s Founder Sandra Conte and former Family Caseworker, Nicola Freeth has now also been CPD accredited, meaning it has been assessed and confirmed to meet Continuing Professional Development Standards.

 A word from Herts Police...

DCI Sarah Gilbertson who works as safeguarding Command in Hertfordshire Police said of the lived experience training:

“We are committed to improving the lives of women subjected to domestic abuse on a daily basis. No one should have to live with fear, abuse or intimidation.  We recognise that the most effective way to train our officers to identify the signs of DA, and in particular the more subtle offence of coercive control, is by hearing from the women who have been through it themselves.

Lived experience teaches our officers what to look for and how to hear what is not being said by a victim. It is a stark reminder of why they chose this profession and provides them with the opportunity to ask questions and be professionally curious in a controlled environment.  We are grateful to the support of Future Living and the Survivors, and look forward to rolling this training out to our frontline officers.”

We are looking forward to getting the training underway next year and will keep you updated on the progress.
